The Masthead

Saltbeam, considered.

A quarterly review of furniture, kitchens, and the considered home, founded in MMXXV by writers who would rather write less and look longer.

Saltbeam is a quarterly review of furniture, kitchens, and the considered home. We exist for the reader who suspects that the homes she walks through are made or unmade by a hundred small decisions, and who would rather understand those decisions than receive another newsletter of trends. Our beat is the long-lived object: the sofa that will be reupholstered three times, the marble slab inherited across two kitchens, the bentwood rack that has held a generation's worth of overcoats. We test such objects by living with them, sometimes for months, before we write.

Editorial Standards

We do not run paid placements, sponsored editorial, or undisclosed gifting. Every object reviewed in Saltbeam was either purchased at retail by the editor or borrowed from a manufacturer with the explicit understanding that the loan would not influence the review. The objects loaned are noted as such in the verdict.

We do not publish a star rating without an attached verdict line. The star rating is a summary of the verdict, not its substitute, and we believe a magazine that prints stars without prose has confused itself with a database. Each verdict is signed.

We test in domestic conditions. We do not stage a dining table for a photograph and then return it. The Hadleigh sofa in this issue's review has been sat on, slept on, eaten on, and cried on. The notes reflect the actual conditions of domestic use, including the indignities visited on furniture by pets, children, and the slow accumulation of pet hair.

We disclose what we do not know. A reviewer who has not lived with an object for at least a month is not yet qualified to render a verdict on its long-term behavior, and we will not pretend otherwise. Where we have lived with an object only briefly, we say so.

Saltbeam is set in Source Serif 4, with the household serif fallback in browsers that have not loaded the primary face. Headings are set in the same family at six hundred weight; standfirsts in italic at four hundred. The cover ornament is the floral heart (❦), used here in brass; the divider ornament is the reference glyph (※). The publication is printed in cream paper with oxblood and brass inks. We thank the small workrooms whose furniture has lived with us this winter for letting us be honest in print.
